How to Select an Event

You can select an Event directly from the homepage by clicking on a tab in the timeline, scrolling left for historical events and right for future events. Alternatively, refine your selection by using one of the several filters available.

By Impact Level

Events are categorised into High, Medium and Low impact events according to the effect the event is likely to have on the asset price and the wider market.

You can filter by Impact Level by clicking on the relevant impact level even in the timeline view. This will display all events of that level for that particular day in the space below.

Alternatively, use the Filters view to select the Impact Level. This will return all events of this level for the current time period. If you adjusted the time period prior to this step then the search results will display events for the adjusted period.

By Country

All events are categorised by the country where the economic announcement originates from.

The country code is displayed on each individual event but to search by Country you will need to use the Filters View.

The list of countries is categorised into Majors and Other with the Majors being the more popular assets to trade.

By Date

All events are categorised according to the date of the announcement. You can filter by dates using several functions:

Scrolling Timeline

You can filter by dates using the scroll bar, clicking on the left side of the timeline to see historical events and clicking to the right of the timeline to see future events. The dates on display can be seen on the line underneath the events.

Date Picker

Click on the Date Picker and use the arrows to find the month you wish to view. Select the date in that month by clicking on the number and the timeline will automatically update to that date. The selected date is visible underneath the events.

How to Interpret the Event Data

About the Event

To learn more about an individual event, we recommend you start with reading the Event Description. This will explain what the event is about, which country the data is released from and why the event is important within the markets.

Below the Event Description is a list of the assets that the selected event is likely to affect. These vary according to country of origin and the impact level of the event.

Select an asset from the list of Affected Assets to learn more about how the event has affected this asset’s performance in the past, what the current data is telling you and therefore what the anticipated impact of the next event will be on this asset.

Event History

The History Chart displays the Forecast and Actual data of the past 16 events in a linear chart display. Some event forecasts are more accurate than others and this chart can help you to determine the potential accuracy of future events and traders should factor this variance into their decision making.

True Range

The True Range figure below the History Chart is the total price movement of your selected, affected asset after the event in absolute terms. For example, if the asset price moved 15% up and 15% down, the True Range is going to be 30% and not 0%.

The True Range data can be viewed according to a time frame of 1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week or 1 Month after the event. Use the Potential Range chart to the right of the History Chart to amend the time frame on the History Chart.

Potential Range

The Potential Range chart is the average of the True Range price movement of your selected, affected asset according to specific time frames for the past 10 events. Use this figure as a guide to anticipate how the asset price is likely to move after the next event.

Price Data

To see how the price of your selected instrument changed after a specific event in the past, click on an event in the Historical Chart. The price movement 1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week and 1 Month is displayed.

In this example below, we have clicked on the Q3 2021 Nonfarm Payroll event where there was a large variance between the Forecasted and Actual data. There was a bullish price movement 1 Hour and 1 Day after the event but a fairly significant bearish movement 1 Week and 1 Month after the event. This could be because the initial movement had been priced in on the forecasted figure whereas the bearish movement was a result of the figures coming in well below expectation and the market adjusted.

News Sentiment

The News Sentiment gauge is a metric of how the global investment community is feeling about this particular asset 1 Day before the event. This could contribute to the movement of the asset price both before and after the event particularly if the results are below expectations.

To see the longer term effect of news sentiment on the asset’s price, you can use the News Sentiment chart. A drop in sentiment can often lead to a faster and more significant movement in an asset’s price whereas positive sentiment can take longer to be priced in and not necessarily as significant.

News

This section displays the latest FX News from FXStreet (Dow Jones also available). Stay up to date with the latest stories affecting your selected, affected asset.
